Taieri cattleman Doug Lindsay took honours at the recent Otago Southland beef competition held at the Alliance Mataura plant last week.
His entry, a 342kg Limousin steer, beat off a Limousin heifer bred by the Johnstone family from Outram.
Mr Lindsay's entry scored consistently high throughout the competition but recorded the largest eye muscle area, 132cm2, since 2003.
There were 14 heifers and 18 steers entered, of which 15 were owner-bred and 17 purchased.
A Blonde D'Aquitane steer entered by the Muir family of Tuturau was named the PGG Wrightson most valuable animal on the day.
