Don Morrison has won the Glammies. The Gore farmer's Growbulk lamb was named 2012 Beef and Lamb New Zealand Golden Lamb Awards grand champion at the Upper Clutha A and P Show.

Mr Morrison received a cheque for $2000, a trophy and a magnum of Mt Difficulty pinot noir wine.

The finals of the awards were judged by Prime Minister John Key, 2011 supercross world champion Sarah Walker, 2012 Beef and Lamb ambassador chef Ben Batterbury, and chief judge and Invercargill chef Graham Hawkes.

The Glammies attracted a record 150 entries, which all underwent testing at Carne Technologies. Factors such as tenderness, colour and succulence were tested to determine the top 20 finalists tasted in Wanaka.

Waipahi farmer and first-time finalist Graham Clarke, of Marama Organics, was delighted with his second place in the open class.

His stock manager believed the quality of any meat was "98% feeding, 2% breeding", which was why the property's 4000 ewes and 5000 lambs received fortnightly doses of organic liquid seaweed and cider vinegar to improve their health.

Countdown South Island was awarded the champion meat retailer trophy and the Alliance Group's Mataura plant was named winning processor.
