Bidding subdued, prices cheaper

Prices for most types of wool at the combined auction of North and South Island wool in Christchurch on Thursday finished cheaper than the previous week's sale.

With the pressure of the Kiwi dollar trading strongly at 86.8c to the US, bidding and competition was more subdued, reflected by a passing of 40%. There were 17,000 bales offered.

Compared to the previous sale, good style full length crossbred fleece (31 to 39 micron) and second shear fleece (75mm-125mm) was 3%-4% cheaper, second shear (50mm-100mm) dropped 2%-3%, crossbred oddments dropped 4% and mid-micron wool sold 2%-4% cheaper, PGG Wrightson Wool auctioneer Dave Burridge said.

On top of the currency effect, the very high volumes of wool on offer over the European summer holiday season was putting pressure on price levels, as demand was restricted, New Zealand Wool Services International general manager John Dawson said.

Buyers from Australia and New Zealand, China and India took principal roles, with support from Western Europe and the United Kingdom.
