Central Otago rowers have had yet another successful turn about Lake Ruataniwha during New Zealand’s largest rowing regatta.

The 2024 Maadi Cup was held at Lake Ruataniwha and ran from Monday to Saturday last week.

Dunstan High School rowing co-coach Simon Smith said he and fellow coach Natalie Wilson were incredibly proud of the school’s 14 rowers who took part.

"Most of [the rowers] did two events, some of them did three," Smith said.

Dunstan won gold in the girls under-16 double sculls and silver in three events: the boys under-15 double sculls, girls under-15 double sculls and girls under-16 coxed quad sculls.

Smith was pleased Dunstan High School rowers continued to perform at a high level and consistently challenge the best rowers in the country.

"We’ve been at that level for a number of years and it’s just keeping that ... quality of programme going [and the] athletes coming through is getting us there."

Maadi Cup was always a great week away, he said.

"[It is] always good fun to be away competing and in a very supportive, happy group."

Mount Aspiring College teacher in charge of rowing Angela Rickard said the school sent 20 athletes to Maadi Cup and they had a lot to be proud of following the event.

"We are a small rowing squad who performed really well throughout the regatta," Rickard said.

"As a group they were extremely supportive to each other and upheld a positive attitude even when the racing got tough."

Hugo Sinclair and Harry Hope won bronze in the under-18 novice double sculls, a feat made particularly impressive as both boys had only taken up rowing this season, Rickard said.

She thanked the coaches, parent helpers and supporters who helped make the event so positive for the school.

"It was a very successful week and the squad can now enjoy a well-deserved winter break before we look forward to the 2024-2025 rowing season."

Cromwell College also sent a squad of rowers, who competed in 11 events.
