Silver for Paterson in second appearance for NZ

Esme Paterson’s second outing in black has been a good one.

The Dunedin Aquablack won silver at the Oceania championships on the Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

Heading into the women’s 100m butterfly seeded fourth, Paterson produced a spectacular finish to land on the podium with her time of 1min 1.32sec.

It marked her third-fastest time aver the 100m distance.

Jessica Cole won gold in 59.68sec and fellow Australian Lillie McPherson claimed bronze in 1min 1.40sec.

Paterson, who also represented New Zealand at the world short-course championships in 2022, finished fourth in the 200m butterfly earlier in the week.

She finished in 2min 17.31sec, which also marked her third-fastest time over the long-course distance.

Her results came off the back of a solid appearance at the national championships, in Hawke’s Bay, a fortnight ago.

She gained silver in the women’s 200m butterfly and was fourth in the 100m butterfly and seventh in the 50m butterfly at the national event.

The Neptune swimmer is part of a seven-strong team representing New Zealand on the Gold Coast.

It is the first time the Oceania championships have been held since 2018, when they were in Papua New Guinea.

Dunedin swimmer Luan Grobbelaar was also selected for the competition, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Swimming Otago life member Alan Hale (Taieri) has been at the event as an official. The championships finished yesterday.
