The Ice Blacks made a slow start but finished with a bang in their opening game at a world tournament yesterday.

They came from a goal down to beat Chinese Taipei 5-1 in the opening round of the division two, group B world championships in Bulgaria.

Perhaps there was some jet lag at play as the Ice Blacks coughed up a goal after just 2min 26sec.

They were still trailing 1-0 early in the second period when Jacob Carey, assisted by West Auckland Admirals defenceman Alexander Regan, grabbed the equaliser.

It was a first goal in national colours for the Canberra-based 18-year-old forward.

The game might have been in the balance at 1-1 heading into the final period, but the Ice Blacks took command of proceedings.

Stampede defenceman Stefan Amston, assisted by Callum Burns and Michael Attwell, scored the go-ahead goal, and youngster Jackson Fontaine made it 3-1 (assisted by Amston and Colin McIntosh) with his first Ice Blacks goal.

Queenstown fans would have enjoyed watching two Stampede veterans ice the win.

Matt Schneider (38) made it 4-1 before McIntosh (36) completed the scoring with his first goal in black.

Southern Stampede goalie Joel Hasselman got the start and saved 22 of the 23 shots on his net.

The Ice Blacks were playing Georgia overnight.
