Ice Blacks down Georgia to make it two wins from two

Two from two for the Ice Blacks.

New Zealand continued their strong start to the division two, group B world championships with a 6-2 win over Georgia in Bulgaria yesterday.

It followed the men’s side’s 5-1 win over Chinese Taipei on the opening day.

The Ice Blacks conceded an early goal but equalised just 21sec later through Stampede forward Colin McIntosh.

They took a 2-1 lead through Stampede defenceman Stefan Amston as the Georgians started to get into penalty trouble.

That was the score at the end of the first period when there was a slight issue.

Zamboni problems forced a wait of nearly an hour, and the game was in danger of being abandoned when a back-up ice-smoother was found.

A third Stampede forward, Ryan Strayer, scored for the Ice Blacks, and Botany Swarm forward Michael Attwell made it 4-1.

Robin Fortanov made it 5-1 in the final period, and after the Georgians scored a consolation, youngster Jackson Fontaine grabbed the Ice Blacks’ sixth goal.

Amston (two), Strayer, McIntosh, Attwell, Connor Harrison, Luke Simon, Ivan Dalmatau and Ondrej Kozak chipped in with assists for the Ice Blacks.

Csaba Kercso-Magos got the start in goal and saved 34 of the 36 shots on his net.

The Ice Blacks play host nation Bulgaria tomorrow morning (NZ time).
