Tindall drama overshadows naming

No-one can be quite sure why England coach Martin Johnson has made nine changes to the side named to play Georgia at Otago Stadium tomorrow.

One strongly suspects it is an opportunity to give his key players a spell during a game England is expected to win, and win well.

But the make-up of the starting XV was the last thing on anyone's mind at yesterday's press conference in Dunedin.

Even the return of captain Lewis Moody from a knee injury barely rated a mention. It was the much talked about night out in Queenstown and the emergence of CCTV footage, which appears to show Mike Tindall, who is married to the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips, holding hands and flirting with an attractive young lady, that captured the gathered media's attention.

The incident has completely overshadowed the game but Martin believes it will also help unify the team.

"I think it brings teams together - this sort of thing," Martin said.

"I've spoken to Mike. It is not ideal for him but he will get on with it. In terms of the team, they rally around people that have been picked out like that and, as a group, I'm sure they will be stronger for it."

In a tense press conference, Martin made no apology for allowing his side to blow off some steam with a few beers. And there will be no new curfew imposed on the players despite the embarrassing incident.

"We knew the players were going to go out and have a few beers - people can report it how they want to report it.

"But, as I said, I'd rather they got out and about in the community as they have done all week."

Six players: Manu Tuilagi, Chris Ashton, Ben Foden, Nick Easter, Delon Armitage and Dan Cole will back up from the 13-9 win against Argentina. All seven reserves from that match have been promoted to the run on side.

Notably, talented first five-eighth Toby Flood will get a chance to impress after Jonny Wilkinson had an off night with the boot against Argentina.

Flood was the first-choice No 10 during the Six Nations and will start outside halfback Ben Youngs, who came off the bench to score the match-winning try against Argentina.

Former New Zealand rugby league representative Shontayne Hape replaces Tindall at second five-eighth. There is also some local interest in the side with the two Toms - Tom Palmer and Tom Wood - getting a start. Tom Wood played for North Otago in 2006 and Tom Palmer spent a year at Otago Boys' High School.

"We're excited about getting back to Dunedin," Johnson said.

"It was a great game last week, great atmosphere ... a real tough battle. You almost felt it was sudden death already. That's great, that's what you want - battled-hardened as you go through."
