The Dunedin City Wind Orchestra will tackle a challenging programme of works, including several adapted by conductor Mark Anderson, in its "Pines of Rome" concert this weekend.

The orchestra will be joined by the Mosgiel Brass Band and soloist David Burchell to perform Respighi’s Pines of Rome and other works, from 3pm at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Dunedin City Wind Orchestra is a community orchestra involving players at various stages of their musical learning.

Regular conductor Mark Anderson is a prolific adapter of works for the Dunedin City Wind Orchestra — from 1960s television theme tunes to large orchestral works.

Adapting the orchestral work for the wind orchestra, along with other works, was a project for Anderson during Covid-19 lockdowns, and calls for more instruments.

The Mosgiel Brass Band will bolster the ranks of players, with Burchell performing as organ soloist.

The concert will also feature an intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, by Pietro Mascagni; Les Preludes, by Franz Liszt (arranged by Anderson); and Light Cavalry, by Franz von Suppe.

The Mosgiel Brass Band will present several works of its own, including Freefall, by Dean Jones; Dances with Wolves, by John Barry; and The Lady from the Fountain from A Little Light Music, by Philip Wilby.

Sunday’s concert is supported by The Lion Foundation. Tickets will be sold at the door.
