Volunteer South chief executive Sues Russell said the awards, which were run in 2021 and 2022 as a celebration of local volunteer achievement, would not go ahead this year and would instead be held in 2024.
"Our organising committee reviewed the awards ceremony and came to the conclusion that it would be better to hold it every two years," Ms Russell said.
Reasoning included that the resources, financial and time commitments were too large for Volunteer South to manage hosting the awards on an annual basis. In addition, holding the awards every two years would take the pressure off those nominating people for awards, both individuals and organisations.
Despite the move, Volunteer South remained committed to the awards.
"We believe they are a wonderful way of expressing gratitude for what volunteers do, and celebrating them with a lovely community event."
The organisation was still considering how to expand the awards to include a regional focus, she said.
Ms Russell said Volunteer South continued to be "incredibly busy" as it worked to support local volunteers, and was offering "volunteer hubs" in different parts of the city where people could pop in and meet face-to face.
The Mosgiel hub runs on Fridays, from 10am-noon, at Mosgiel Library, 7 Hartstonge Ave.
