Keen mountainbikers and hikers will have the chance to tackle the challenges of the Maungatua mountain range this Sunday, in two fundraising events organised by Taieri Rotary.

Club member Colin Brown said the club was working to raise funds to support a Taieri Trails Group initiative to build an off-road cycle and walking track between Mosgiel and Outram.

Mr Brown is chairman of the group, which has also done a feasibility study on creating a connecting track to run from Wingatui to Waihola.

The ‘‘Round the Mountain’’ event will offer an off-road adventure cycle around the range, for mountainbike riders, traversing nine properties and offering spectacular views.

Reasonable competence and fitness are required for the event, which is also suitable for electric mountainbikes, but not commuter bikes.

‘‘Some of the trails will be quite rough in places, so you will need to have some experience,’’ he said.

For keen hikers, the ‘‘Up the Mountain’’ event will start from Horsehoof Station woolshed and climb 450m to the north end of the Maungatua range and return.

Moderate fitness is also required for this event, which promises spectacular views from the peak.
