Young players gathering during the weekend for the South Island Secondary School Badminton Cup enjoyed a fast-paced series of games at the Otago Badminton Centre in St Kilda.

Players from Columba College, Otago Boys’ High School, King’s High School, Waitaki Girls’ High School, South Westland Area School, Burnside High School and James Hargest College took part in matches over the weekend.

Badminton New Zealand referee David Wasley said there were eleven teams — five girls’ teams and six boys’.

The teams played round robin games.

The standard of play was quite competitive with a number of the boys’ games coming "down to the wire", with a difference of only a few points.

"There have been some good battles."

Teams were made up of four players, who played two doubles matches and four singles, he said.

The results were calculated at the end. Top teams were Burnside High School, who took away the boys’ cup, and Columba College, who won the girls’ cup.

Events and communications manager Jonathon Stone said the event was focused on providing a fun and local opportunity for South Island schools to compete, and led towards the national championships.

"We look forward to seeing our best schools from the South Island take on their next challenge at the upcoming national championships in Porirua."
