The Year of the Dragon was celebrated on Saturday with a Chinese New Year concert that was a journey through China’s rich musical heritage.

"Harmony of Serenity: A Musical Journey Through China" at the University of Otago’s Marama Hall showcased traditional Chinese music, dance and song.

Performances included a traditional music ensemble comprised of Jianqi Zhang, Haiting Zhu, Yanan Qi, Nana Qi, Rong Zhang, Yanling Sun, Griffin Nichol and Tong Liu performing Blooming Flowers, Full Moon Happiness, Joyful Celebration.

A Haiyang Yangge dance was performed by Haiyang Yankee and Yanling Sun.

I Love You, China was sung by Rong Zhang, accompanied on the piano by Yanan Qi.

Jianqi Zhang, Haiting Zhu and Yanan Qi performed the Dance of the Golden Snake.

Jianqi Zhang and Haiting Zhu performed Zizhu Melody and Jianqi Zhang, Haiting Zhu and Nana Qi performed Dance Music of the Heavenly Palace.

The Story of Lotus Dance was performed by Yanling Sun.

Rong Zhang, accompanied by Yanan Qi on the piano, sang Three Wishes of the Rose and Torch of the Torch Festival.

Jianqi Zhang performed the flute solo Huan Ju Yi Tang.

About 100 people attended the University of Otago School of Performing Arts event.

President of the Dunedin Chinese Art and Instrument Association and PhD student in the School of Performing Arts Yanan Qi said the event ran smoothly and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

"As for running it again next year, I’m definitely considering it.

"It was a great turnout, and the feedback has been positive, so it’s likely we’ll do it again."

She thanked the event donors the Dunedin Chinese Scholars and Student Association, Stadium Harbourview Hotel, Dunedin Chinese Art and Instrument Association and HappyGo Asian Market.
