Created by local poetry and reading advocate Ruth Arnison, as part of her ongoing Poetry in Motion project (formerly Poems in the Waiting Room), "Musical Chairs" is a clever match-up of words and visual art.
As in previous years, Arnison invited local artists to respond to one of a group of selected poems, this time on the theme of music.
The artists include Imogen Berwick, Pauline Bellamy, Pamela Brown, Roz Wood, Sheryl McCammon, Jill Bowie, Sarah Flourish, Claire Rye, and Thandi Sliepen, whose chair-based creations range from works to be hung on walls to chairs that can be used as chairs.
The poets whose work they have responded to include Brian Turner, Emma Neale, Gillian Sullivan, Richard Aronowitz, Kath Beattie , Adrienne Jansen, and more.
"I chose a mixture of poets from New Zealand, and a couple from overseas, whose work had really good musical themes," Arnison said.
"The results have been fascinating — we have a really eclectic mix of chairs."
Artist and upholsterer Imogen Berwick used repurposed fabric to create a pheasant-themed chair, in response to the poem Prelude, by Richard Aronowitz.
"His reference to the pheasant in the poem gave me the inspiration for my chair — it was an interesting and enjoyable project," she said.
"Musical Chairs" is on display at Resene Colourshop, 172 Crawford St, until October 31. All chairs are for sale.
