Having cancelled last year’s spring show because of Covid, Dunedin Horticultural Society president Stuart Brown was delighted with the response to last weekend’s show, held at the St Kilda Bowling Club.

Although he was a little disappointed with the number of entries, as many daffodils had flowered too early, the quality made up for that.

Top bloom went to Alan Brown for a near-perfect Zilch daffodil, whose light yellow corona (trumpet), flushed with pink, was enhanced by its white outer petals (perianth).

It was something of a repeat performance by the Waihola grower, as he took the same award two years ago with a different variety, Manuka.

In other sections, there was a good line-up of flowering shrubs, bonsai and preserves, although — as expected at a spring show — the vegetable entries were sparse.

In the novice bonsai, Stuart Brown and his wife, Lesley, were winners with their first entry in the section, the miniature tree the result of attending a class last year with long-time bonsai grower and former DHS president Joy Morton.
