Scheme offers support in bid to keep home lease

Sustaining Tenancies is a support programme for people who are struggling to hold on to the lease for their home.

This is especially for those who are vulnerable or facing practical problems that are getting in the way of them keeping their home.

It can be mental health issues, an "adverse life event" such as a break-up, loss of job or family violence, things not going right with the landlord, or alcohol or drug use. It can be the uncertainty and inexperience that comes from getting out of prison.

We know that the more children are moved house (and school) during their early years, the harder it is for them to find their feet in later life.

And we know that there are many other hidden costs in moving that often set our finances back a good couple of years. No-one needs that!

Following our successful implementation of Sustaining Tenancies in Southland, the Mission is now a Sustaining Tenancies provider in Dunedin.

Sustaining Tenancies covers anyone renting in Dunedin either from private, community, or public landlords.

Following contact, we assess with the tenant what sort of help is needed, work to develop a client-led plan and work together to find and provide the help that can make a difference.

Our Invercargill service has helped renters with the rising cost of power, homelessness due to a fire, difficulties pulling together a bond, the change in family finances when a partner moves (or is kicked) out and sudden rent increases.

And anyone can make a referral.
