Poppy Day collection tomorrow

Poppy Day is going ahead tomorrow, albeit on a much smaller scale than in previous years.

Dunedin RSA Welfare Trust administrator Sally Turner said it had been decided it would not be possible to rely on volunteers to staff the usual 35 stands throughout the city.

Instead, there will be 11 collection stands located mainly at supermarkets, retail spaces and malls, mainly staffed by teams of volunteers from local businesses, clubs, and the Dunedin RSA executive.

"We think this will be a good way to keep our vulnerable older collectors safe, while still having a good Poppy Day collection," Mrs Turner said.

Cadets will also be out on Saturday morning to collect outside the city’s main supermarkets.

Throughout this month, there have been boxes of poppies displayed on the counters of local businesses for people to buy.

In addition, there are posters on display which feature a QR code, which people can scan to make a donation to the Poppy Day cause. Funds donated will go to the Dunedin RSA Welfare Trust to be used to assist veterans and their families with one-off expenses.
