Dunedin singer and PhD candidate Claire Barton was keen to learn as much as she could about the city’s classical singers, from choral singers to opera, particularly women.
Barton’s PhD, which she embarked on in 2021, incorporates both music and history.
It focuses on the lives and careers of female singers and singing teachers in Dunedin during the second half of the 20th century.
"When I would head away to perform outside Dunedin, people would often comment that there must be something in the water here," Barton said.
"There is definitely a tradition of singing teaching in Dunedin, and also a history of structures that help support singers.
"It is interesting that a lot of those structures were founded by women, or have huge female involvement.
"The city also has a strong arts community.
"Dunedin is where I have always felt the most comfortable and supported as a musician."
Despite all the activity, there had been very little published about Dunedin singers and teachers in the second half of the 20th century, which was why she had chosen to focus on it.
A major component of her research was an online survey for singers, singing teachers, people associated with the music department and the classical singing community, as well as those within the wider arts community.
"I’m very keen to hear from as many people as possible through the survey, men and women, both for the information they will provide and also to help me identify more people to interview."
The survey is open to people over 18 years, in the hopes of gathering the widest possible selection of data.
"The more people who respond, the more statistically valid the survey becomes."
Barton’s PhD research was being conducted alongside performing regularly as a singer.
She most recently sang as part of the Olveston at Six programme for the Dunedin Arts Festival.
"I really enjoy doing research and singing at the same time."
To participate in the survey, follow the online link at bit.ly/singing-survey, or hard copies can be collected from the reception desk at the School of Performing Arts. The survey closes on November 7.
