Pedals Dunedin courier Ashley Heydon (left) and founder Liam Harrison are ready to ride with a new e-bike courier business.

Mr Harrison said their e-bikes could carry up to 90kg of goods, and with a 500w motor, the bikes could reach speeds over 50kmh.

The environmentally friendly bikes were useful for manoeuvering , in particular while construction activity caused challenges for drivers.

"With the combination of a hospital build and ongoing roadworks within the central city, getting around town by car is only getting more difficult," he said.

The company offered a range of services including same day delivery within the radius of St Clair Esplanade to North East Valley.

A Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency spokesperson said when riding on a public road e-bike riders were subject to the posted speed limit which applies to all road users.

If riding on a cycleway or shared path there might be local bylaws which applied.
