Maintaining hedge a ‘joy’

This sculpted hedge, on the corner of Shetland and Mount Sts, Wakari, has attracted attention for at least 65 years.

A 71-year-old woman recalls passing it on the way to school and contractor Dave Perry clips the macrocarpa hedge twice a year for the owner, who bought the property a year ago, and is committed to keeping the green sculpture.

Mr Perry said a previous owner altered the design 12 years ago to include the kereru and dolphin.

‘‘It takes a full day to trim and it’s a joy to cut,’’ he said.

‘‘The original hedge is at least 100-years-old, I’d say, and it would be great to hear if people have memories or old pics of its early days.’’
