Mrs Joyce has decided to enter a bloom or three in the Otago Lily Society’s show, which is to be be held Saturday, January 20.
Although she has been a society member for "six or seven years", this will be the first time she has exhibited in a show.
She has served in many other ways — making tea, co-judging the shows’ photographic competitions and "babysitting" potted lilies the society raises to sell at its shows.
Mrs Joyce’s friend Pam Wells is urging her to show her blooms, saying it is more important to give the public the opportunity to see lots of lily varieties than to be there to win prizes.
Mrs Wells always exhibits, and this year is thinking about resuming showing in the floral art section, an area in which she has been very successful in the past.
She is contemplating how to interpret the two options — "Flora and fauna", and "Bucket list" — which are each split into novice and open divisions.
A member for more than two decades, she joined the Otago Lily Society soon after it was formed and loves old lilies, which tend to get lost because there are so many new varieties to choose from.
Both women said loving all lilies had its down side.
"It’s disastrous. Your car’s just not big enough to bring them all home," Mrs Joyce said.
The Otago Lily Society’s annual show will be held on Saturday, January 20, at the St Kilda Bowling Club, Royal Tce, Dunedin.
Lily stems or individual florets and floral arrangements can be taken to the venue on Friday 19 between 1pm and 6pm, or Saturday 20 between 7.30am and 9.30am.
Showing is free and society members will be on hand to help exhibitors.
The show is open to the public between 11.30am and 4pm on Saturday.
Entry is $5 for adults, children free.
