The Dunedin Jazz Club will round out its 2024 season with a performance by the Dan Costa Quartet.

The show, to be held at Hanover Hall next Friday, November 1, will be led by internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Dan Costa and will showcase his original Latin-jazz compositions.

In a press release, the Dunedin Jazz Club said Costa would be joined on stage by club director Bill Martin (tenor saxophone), Umar Zakaria (double bass) and Carl Woodward (drums).

Each musician would bring a deep understanding of Latin rhythms and jazz improvisation to the performance.

The Dunedin show marks the beginning of a two-week tour for Costa, as part of the 2024 Chamber Music New Zealand partnership series.

Costa’s work, which integrates modern jazz with world music and philosophical themes, has been widely praised.

Originally from London, Costa has spent his life immersed in diverse cultures, having lived in eight countries and become fluent in eight languages. He is based in Georgia and regularly tours internationally.

The concert will feature compositions from Costa’s latest album Beams (2022), recorded with jazz greats such as John Patitucci and Dave Liebman in New York.

Costa’s music, deeply rooted in Latin rhythms, reflects his extensive studies in Brazil, where he honed his approach to incorporating traditional Brazilian folk percussion into his piano compositions.

As the final concert of the year at Hanover Hall, this event offers Dunedin jazz audiences a chance to hear world-class musicians performing new and innovative compositions. Doors open at 7pm and the music starts at 7.30pm.
