A local charity aims to raise funds for persecuted individuals by spreading festive cheer.

The Starfish Collective will be selling seasonal-themed crafts and food at the Araiteuru Marae Gala Day Festival taking place on Saturday.

Trustee Kirsteen McLay said funds raised will help support two men who live fearful lives because of their sexuality.

The collective is in touch with a man in Indonesia, who Ms McLay calls "Paul" to disguise his identity.

Paul shared with Ms McLay that he lives in fear in a nation where attacks on the LGBTQ+ community have intensified in recent years.

He hopes to find refuge in New Zealand, saying he just wants to live in peace for the rest of his life as his authentic self.

The collective is raising funds to help him potentially find asylum in New Zealand.

Paul said gay men had been arrested and publicly flogged as punishment for having sex.

In one province, a police task force was established to investigate LGBTQ+ activity.

In North Jakarta a transgender woman was burned to death, and beauty salons where transgender people often work had been targeted by police raids.

The collective is also supporting a young gay man in Somalia, referred to as Mohammad to protect his identity.

He also faces persecution in a country where gay men have been stoned to death or murdered by their own families for bringing shame upon them.

To raise funds for these men persecuted for their sexuality, the collective will run a stall at the Araiteuru Marae Gala Day Festival.

Ms McLay said she will host the stall on behalf of the collective and has made festive-themed cookies and sweets for sale.

Using material donated by Belinda Le Lievre of the Dunedin Curtain Bank, Ms McLay has also crafted reusable Christmas present pouches to reduce single-use wrapping paper.
