Pupils, parents and teachers gathered at Port Chalmers School on Sunday for the unveiling of a new, large mural at the school.

The mural was created by this year’s West Harbour Arts Charitable Trust’s artist in residence Kate Stevens West, of Wellington.

She worked with pupils from Port Chalmers School, Port Chalmers Kindergarten, Koputai Early Childhood Centre and Pūrākaunui School to help guide creating an artwork that would showcase the local environment.

She also worked with mana whenua from Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki to explore local Kai Tahu creation stories.

"We also told the story of te waka Āraiteuru."

Pupils contributed individual pieces to the mural. Some painted on wooden cutouts contributed by the North Dunedin Shed Society.

A second mural designed and painted by pupils from Pūrākaunui School will be installed at their school at a later date.

West enjoyed the time spent with the local community.

"It’s been amazing meeting all the children — over 200 children have participated in this."

"The kids are so creative and they got really invested in their work ... — it was really wonderful to see."

This year the trust is celebrating 25 years of bringing artists and the local community together through art.

Each year it invites an artist to run a programme over about a week for young children to introduce them to a different art form.
