A clan leader is looking forward to visiting Dunedin for the first time.

Clan Matheson chief Sir Alexander Matheson and wife Katharine, Lady Matheson will take part in a Clan Matheson event next week in the city.

Sir Alexander said the aim of the visit was to promote interest in the clan society, which was thriving in New Zealand.

"Katharine and I are much looking forward to our New Zealand visit.

"We have been once before, in 2008, when I was representing my father who was then chief of the clan."

During that visit, the couple stayed in Auckland for four days.

"This time we will be here for over two and a-half weeks, and will be travelling in both the North and South Islands.

"Dunedin is famous around the world for its strong Scottish character and we are both looking forward to seeing it for the first time."

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Alexander Fergus Matheson became the 8th Baronet of Lochalsh and 28th chief of the clan upon the death of his father, Sir Fergus Matheson, in 2017.

He studied at Durham University for three years before joining the Coldstream Guards, a tradition honoured by many members of his family.

Between 1973 and 2001, he served as a regular officer in the United Kingdom and in overseas postings.

After concluding his military service, Sir Alexander became the head of the British Exploring Society and later took up the role of Secretary of the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St James’s Palace.

He has also served in the Royal Household as a Gentleman Usher and Extra Equerry to both her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Majesty King Charles III.

Lady Matheson grew up in Norfolk, where her father dedicated six decades to the horse racing industry.

Her mother served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

She spent most of her working life as a law lecturer, retiring last year, although she still undertakes freelance exam writing and marking.

She is a keen tennis player and an enthusiastic bridge player while also fulfilling duties as a church warden and trustee of two charities.

While in New Zealand, the couple will also attend the Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo, where Clan Matheson will be the featured clan.

• The Clan Matheson dinner, including meeting Sir Alexander and Lady Matheson, will take place on Wednesday, January 29, from 5.30pm at the Mosgiel Memorial RSA Spitfire Restaurant, 6 Church Street, Mosgiel.

While of particular interest to those with Matheson heritage, everyone is welcome.

Clan Matheson

The name Matheson comes from the Gaelic MacMathan, which means "son of the bear".

In his 1882 book on the history of the Mathesons, author Alexander MacKenzie described the tribe emigrating to Scotland, then moving to Ireland in the third or fourth century.

MacKenzie wrote when Kenneth, the third king of Scotland, was at war with the Picts in the 9th century, a "MacMathan" of the House of Monaghan came to his aid.

After emerging victorious from his war with the Picts, the king rewarded MacMathan with land in Lochalsh, Scotland.
