The beauty and history of Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua will provide a stunning backdrop and an exciting outing for families in the inaugural Quarantine Island Kite Day event this weekend.

Hosted by the Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua community, in partnership with the Southern Heritage Trust and Port to Port ferries, the family-friendly event is part of the Ōtepoti Dunedin Heritage Festival.

The kite flying days will be held this Saturday and Sunday from 10am.

In the lead-up, free kite decorating sessions are being held at Port Chalmers Library, from 2pm-4pm, today and tomorrow, led by local artist and Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua community member Jo St Baker.

But no need to worry if you do not have a kite — they will be provided to anyone who does not have one.

Southern Heritage Trust member Jonathan Cweorth said the trust was delighted to support the "fantastic event".

"The Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua community is keen to share the magic of the island with the wider public, and to encourage more visitors.

"Kite day is a great way to do this. We all hope it will become an annual event, and grow from strength to strength."

The events are a fun early highlight of the Ōtepoti Dunedin Heritage Festival, which runs for most of this month, and has a focus on Port Chalmers and environs.
