Yachting: Three Otago identities honoured by Yachting New Zealand

Three Otago yachtsmen have been given Yachting New Zealand honour awards.

Those honoured are Greg Harrex, from Macandrew Bay Boating Club, Trevor Hawke, from Wanaka Yacht and Powerboat Club, and the late Bryan Leckie, of the Waihola Yacht Club.

Harrex has been involved with the Macandrew Bay club for many years, and is a leading coach of junior sailors.

A former commodore of the club, he carries out maintenance and has been a long-serving committee member.

Hawke has been involved in the club in Wanaka for more than 40 years, and does much work around the club.

He is involved in teaching young sailors, and maintains boats and equipment.

Leckie, who died late last year, aged 82, was heavily involved in the Waihola Yacht Club, and the wider Waihola community.

He helped establish the yacht club in 1992 and served as its first commodore.

He taught the basics of sailing to children, and helped with projects such as buildings, ramps and jetties.

It was estimated that each year he gave 450 children their first taste of yachting.

The awards will be pre-sented in Auckland on November 20.
