Tennis: Tertiary run continues

The Tertiary Club remains the only unbeaten team in Dunedin men's tennis after it beat St Clair 6-0 on Saturday.

Normal service returned for Taieri, following its first loss for more than a season last week, when it downed Eastern Harbour 5-1, while Balmacewen Djokovic completed a 6-0 win against Balmacewen Federer.

Aaron Hicks (Tertiary) had to dig deep to end the run of Mitchell Sizemore when he dropped the second set 4-6, but came home with more consistency to win the third 6-1.

After a hard fought 6-3 first set, Hicks found himself down 4-5 with Sizemore to serve.

Two double faults hinted that nerves might take over and Sizemore then went behind love-40, but reeled off five consecutive points to take the set.

The hint of an upset was soon snuffed out as Hicks raced through the decider.

Damian Hill took a set off Chris Duncan but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-0, as Duncan found his mark.

The St Clair veterans Robin Versteeg and Tony Ryder were outplayed by the students Hamish Low and Albert Hailes in short straight sets results.

Harbour's only success against Taieri came when Ryan Eggers, at No1 was too strong for Carlos Reid and won with surprising ease, 6-2, 6-2.

''He was just too good. I tried a lot of things but he never let me in it,'' Reid said.

Eggers was his usual inventive self but added a power game when needed while keeping the pressure on by running down whatever Reid could throw at him.

Darryl Paterson, Phil Williams and Graeme Clarke won all the other singles in straight sets and both doubles went the same way.

Balmacewen Djokovic beat Balmacewen Federer 6-0, winning all the singles comfortably and dropping a set in the doubles before taking the deciding tiebreak 10-7.
