Tennis: Otago B far too strong for North Otago

Otago B was too strong for North Otago in a representative fixture in Dunedin yesterday winning 15-1.

Otago opened the day by taking all eight singles in straight sets, but North Otago fought back during the dayto win a men's double andpush the home team close in several other rubbers.

In the top men's single, Andrew Mitchell dropped only three games to Albert Hailes. Hailes produced several fine winners but mixed this with too many errors.

Georgia Hume returned from Christchurch interclub and was too solid for Nicky Wallace at No 1 winning 6-1, 6-0.

Also impressive for Otago was newcomer Korean student Kyu Kim (16), who beat the experienced Robin Jamieson 6-2, 6-4.

The best match of the day resulted in a remarkable win to Hailes and Jamieson over Mitchell and Kim 1-6, 7-6, 11-9.

The Otago pair raced through the first set but went behind 2-5 in the second before fighting back to level at 5-5. They had several chances while up 6-5 and again in the tiebreak when they bombed two match points. Otago again had a match point in the third set super tiebreak but North Otago took its first such opportunity.

All the other doubles and mixed doubles were closely contested with the visiting side, more accustomed to grass courts in Oamaru, adapting better to the higher bounce of the hardcourts and more frequent volleys of the doubles game.

Ity got within two points of winning a mixed double but Josh Dalziel and Kerry Packer went down 10-8 in the final tiebreak to Henry Hailes and Lauren Fowler.
