Marina Erakovic was no match for world No 9 Sam Stosur at the WTA tournament in Charleston, going down 6-1, 6-2 in just 73 minutes.
The Kiwi No 1 went into the match at the Family Circle Cup in optimistic fashion after her good first-round defeat of Daniela Hantuchova but succumbed easily to the Australian.
It was just the second time the two had met on the WTA Tour, with Stosur winning that match as well.
Last year Erakovic reached the third round at Charleston before falling to Serena Williams, who is the current world No 1 and top seed for this year's event.
Erakovic next plays in the doubles draw with American partner Jessica Pegula but face a difficult match against top seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Liezel Huber in the firt round.
