The McGlashan boys warmed up for the interprovincial junior fixtures next week, coming back from a doubles loss to win both singles against Balmacewen in the first round of the President's Cup in the Dunedin club competition on Saturday.

The two-person competition, without the presence of the out-of-town students, nevertheless resulted in some keenly contested matches.

Carlos Reid and Paddy Ou (McGlashan) reversed their straight-sets doubles result to James Bourne and Jon Bakos when they fought hard to gain the vital singles wins.

Ou took his chances at the end of the tight first set to beat Bakos 7-6, 6-4 and even had the grace to lend a racket to his opponent, who broke strings in both his rackets during the match.

Reid was powerful and aggressive, while being more accurate than Bourne, who also attacked freely, winning surprisingly comfortably 6-3, 6-1.

Eastern Harbour was untroubled to beat Mornington-Roslyn 3-0 in the other men's tie.

St Clair women won all three against Mornington-Roslyn but needed a third-set tiebreak 11-9 to clinch the doubles.

Jessie Stevenson (Balmacewen) faced set points against experienced Debbie Cartwright (Eastern Harbour) but took the points that mattered to win 7-5 6-4.

Debbie Stevens partnered Cartwright and won her two rubbers in straight sets.
