Dunedin swimmers have dipped their toes in Australian waters in a build-up for the world championships in July.

Erika Fairweather, Caitlin Deans, Zac Reid, Luan Grobbelaar — who have all booked their spot for Japan — and Kane Follows spent the weekend competing at the Sydney Open (club swimmers) and Australian university championships.

Fairweather won overall gold in the 200m freestyle, finishing with a time of 1min 55.80sec, and in the 400m freestyle (4min 2.20sec), and claimed silver overall in the 800m freestyle (8min 30.70sec).

Deans was hot on Fairweather’s stroke across all three lengths, picking up personal bests in the 400m and 200m freestyle.

She placed third out of club swimmers, and fourth overall, in the 400m with her time of 4min 11.80sec and in the 800m freestyle (8min 35.90sec). She placed fifth overall in the 200m freestyle (2min 1.04sec).

Reid also had a good weekend, finishing second of the club swimmers, and third overall, in the men’s 800m freestyle with his time of 8min 11.56sec.

He placed third of the club swimmers, and fourth overall, in the 400m freestyle (3min 52.19sec) and 14th overall in the 200m freestyle (1min 53.79sec).

Follows had a stunning weekend, slicing half a second off his men’s 200m backstroke Otago open record he set at the New Zealand championships earlier this year, subject to a pending application and ratification process.

He finished second out of club swimmers, and fifth overall, in the 200m, with a time of 1min 59.36sec.

He also picked up third out of club swimmers, and fifth overall, in the 100m backstroke (55.89sec), and seventh overall in the 50m backstroke (26.26sec).

Grobbelaar swam a personal best in the 200m freestyle heat with a time of 1min 55.08sec.
