Spirit coach adopts an ‘if it ain’t broke’ approach

Otago Spirit coach Craig Sneddon has made a couple tweaks ahead of the game against Wellington in Dunedin this afternoon.

Nothing too drastic. His team is fresh from a rollicking 60-17 win against Taranaki in Dunedin last week.

Experienced centre Cheyenne Cunningham cut her eye in the match and has been ruled out this week.

Te Atawhai Campbell will take her spot.

That was a tough decision for Sneddon. Replacement back Naomi Sopoaga came on for Cunningham in the game against Taranaki and had a storming game.

She swatted aside countless tackles, but Campbell has been in decent form too and got the nod.

Sopoaga certainly impressed Sneddon but "you've got to have people coming off the bench and bringing impact".

"Hopefully she comes on and can bring the same impact she brought last week."

The other change is up front. Prop Eilis Doyle made an impact off the bench and replaces Isla Pringle in the run on side.

"We’ve just got so much depth with the props and we just want to keep our speed high, so we are really just trying to keep everyone fresh so we are playing at a high tempo the whole time."

Experienced loose forwards Greer Muir and Zoe Frood are still out injured. Frood has concussion symptoms and Muir fractured a bone in her hand and hopes to return in time for the playoffs.

Regular hooker Tegan Hollows played at No 8 in the absence of Muir and had a decent game. She has played there at club level and for the Spirit before, so it is not an unfamiliar spot.

She made a few impressive carries and one of them led to a try.

"We had to tinker with things a little bit, didn't we, just with what we had.

"But I think everyone stepped up. It certainly was, I think, our most complete performance of the season. So, no, we're really happy."

Wellington have a potent backline, but Sneddon expects they will try to dominate up front.

"They've played in the premiership for a number of years, and I'm sure they'll be looking to get back up there.

"I think we're going to have to meet their physical challenge that they bring us, and I hope we hold the ball and, I guess, play our tempo so that we can hopefully put them under pressure with our attack."

Veteran Wellington lock Joanah Ngan-Woo will bring up her 100th game.
