Hurricanes and Wellington halfback Piri Weepu is considering his rugby playing future.
The 35-test All Black is off contract at the end of the year and indicated today he has an offer from a French club on the table.
Any decision whether to stay in New Zealand or leave would depend whether he was in the frame for international selection.
"I'll sit down and talk it all over with the ABs (All Blacks) coaches and see where I stand, and see whether I'm going to be a shot or not," Weepu told NewstalkZB.
"You always want to get their feeling on how you've been going and what's been going good for you.
"I guess I'm getting to the stage where I'm coming to the end of my career soon, I've got to look out for myself and make sure I set myself up for life after rugby. If it's playing offshore, then so be it."
Weepu, 26, wasn't selected for the All Blacks' 2007 World Cup campaign in France but elected then to to stay in New Zealand and fight for a test berth. That has largely been achieved as a reserve, with 17 of his last 19 test appearances coming off the bench.
He wasn't picked for last year's end-of-year tour to get over an ankle problem and now finds himself locked in a battle for the halfback role with Highlanders incumbent Jimmy Cowan, Crusaders Andy Ellis and Kahn Fotuali'i, Chiefs sniper Brendon Leonard and Blues halfback Alby Mathewson, whose game has improved since leaving Weepu's shadow at the Hurricanes and heading north this year.
Weepu's prospects haven't been helped by a lack of regular game time at the Hurricanes.
He started the first five games of their campaign but Tyson Keats has worn No 9 in three of their last four matches, with Weepu unavailable for last Friday's defeat of the ACT Brumbies due to a family bereavement.
However, he played for his club side Wainuiomata on Saturday, for whom he kicked seven penalties.
