Rugby: Wakatipu retain White Horse Cup

Wakatipu retained the White Horse Cup without too many problems when it beat Cromwell 45-10 in the last cup defence of the season at the Recreation Ground in Queenstown on Saturday afternoon.

In the second-to-last round of premier rugby in Central Otago, Wakatipu bagged seven tries in the win. Centre Danny King scored twice, extending his tally to 16 for the season.

Replacement loosie Brad Patterson also crossed for a try, his first for the club in three years. Second five-eighth Nathan Reid, openside Marcus Balchin, halfback Richie Stevens and lock Sol Frew also got on the score sheet with tries.

Wing Andre Broughton had an outstanding game in his 50th for the club and was named man of the match.

Cromwell scored two tries, Sam O'Callaghan crossing before halftime and Dennis Smith late in the game.
