Veteran Taieri rugby player Eric Vaafusuaga will come close to an important milestone when he plays his 241st premier match against University B at Tahuna Park on Saturday.

The record is held by Graeme "Billy" Laing, who played 242 premier games for Dunedin.

He retired on 241 games in 1998 but came back in 2005 to play 20 minutes in his 242nd game.

The promotion-relegation match against University B at Tahuna Park will be Vaafusuaga's 193rd premier game for Taieri.

He also played 48 for Green Island between 2001-03 when Taieri did not have a premier one team.

The Taieri club is desperate to regain premier status and Vaafusuaga (38) wants to be part of the Taieri team when it rejoins the premier ranks.

He will definitely be playing again next winter.

"I've enjoyed my club rugby and would like to end my time in premier one grade," Vaafusuaga said.

"Hopefully the promotion-relegation game goes our way on Saturday."

What would it mean if Taieri got back into premier ranks?"It means a lot to me because I've got a young son playing in the junior club," Vaafusuaga said.

"It would be nice for him to see a pathway ahead so they don't have to go away from Taieri to play premier one rugby."

Vaafusuaga is confident Taieri can beat University B.

"It was the biggest thrill to beat Dunedin last Saturday. They had beaten us for the last four years," he said.

"The boys will be a bit more relaxed this week. We will give it a go because we have got nothing to lose. It could be a fantastic time for us."

Vaafusuaga is one of a rare band of 11 players in Dunedin premier club rugby in the 200 club.

By the end of the 2000 season he had played 192 games for Taieri in a premier career that began in 1989 when Taieri beat a Kaikorai team that included All Black Mike Brewer 13-12.

When Taieri could not field a team in 2001, Vaafusuaga shifted to the nearby Green Island club and played No 8 for the premier side for the next three seasons, until Green Island could not field a premier team in the 2004 season.

"I want to play 200 games for Taieri, and break the record," Vaafusuaga said.

"It has been a long wait for me over the last four years. If Taieri hadn't pulled out I could have played over 300 premier games."

Vaafusuaga's wife Rhonda (nee Morrison) will bring their three children to Tahuna Park on Saturday.

Oldest child Jesse (8) has been ball boy for the Taieri premier 2 team for the past two years.

A strong-running No 8, Vaafsuaga was a regular member of Otago B teams during the 1990s and played one game for Otago A in 1998.

The 200-plus list is headed by Graeme Laing (Dunedin) 242, Vaafusuaga 240, Kevin Galliven (Taieri and Dunedin) 235, and Ken Whitson (Taieri) 218.

The others are Paul Bennett (Green Island), Andrew Hendry (Green Island), Laurie Kovaleski (Taieri), Allan Ives (Taieri), Chris Wyllie (Taieri), Simon Maole (Kaikorai) and Hunter Darry (Dunedin).
