Rugby: Union expected to endorse changes

A special general meeting of the Otago Rugby Football Union next Monday night is expected to endorse changes to the way am-ateur rugby is run in the province.

A review of amateur rugby was carried out by the union earlier this year from which proposals were developed.

They include the establishment of a metropolitan rugby council, which will replace the rugby council and the metropolitan committee.

The chairman of this new council will also become a union board member.

Country rugby will no longer refer matters to the defunct rugby council and will handle matters itself, defer to the union board, or to union staff.

Clubs in the metropolitan competition will be able to have only one premier team.

The changes were brought about so clubs could have more input into what was happening.

A junior advisory group will be established to oversee all rugby from secondary school grades down.

The changes have been discussed at four workshops over the past month.
