Rugby: Thomson likely to stay put

Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid is hopeful of retaining Adam Thomson but does not want to bug the new All Black just yet.

Thomson comes off contract with Otago at the end of the year and could be a target of other provinces and overseas clubs.

Reid knows the exciting loose forward is hot property but hopes his future is in Dunedin.

"Adam's indicated he's keen to stay. He's with the All Blacks and I don't need to bother him at the moment," Reid said yesterday.

"I've spoken to Warren Alcock, his agent, and said we're keen. There will be an offer for him shortly.

"We'd like to have it sewn up as possible but I'm also very cognisant of the fact he's with the All Blacks, he's a new All Black and I don't think there's an urgency to bother the lad while he's trying to be an All Black."

Reid is as positive as he can be that Thomson will stay in Otago beyond this year.

"He's indicated he wants to stay, we've indicated we want to keep him and we've recognised he's moved into a new strata. He's arguably one of the marquee players now and our offer will reflect that."

Otago slashed its wage bill last year and will also lose senior player Craig Newby after the Air New Zealand Cup.

That should allow a bit of room to move to get Thomson a better deal, retain senior lock Tom Donnelly - who is clearly in the All Black frame - and eventually think about signing new players.

Otago has made one minor signing, Jonathon Direen.

The promising tighthead prop spent some of his younger days in Palmerston and was in the New Zealand Under-19 team that reached the final of a world tournament in 2006.

New Zealand Maori fullback Glen Horton has not yet signed a new contract.

Horton is experienced and plays a position where Otago does not have great depth, and the ORFU wants to get the deal done.

Ben Smith senior, he who was known as Billy Elusiv for a short time, has gone to Italy to play rugby and be closer to the fashion scene.

Smith and partner Nicola Reilly developed the Elusiv brand in Dunedin.

• It was another busy day at Carisbrook yesterday with 1163 tickets selling for the test between the All Blacks and the Springboks at Carisbrook on July 12.

That leaves fewer than 2800 tickets left with still three days to go before they are placed on national sale.
