Rugby: Tasman lock cited for tackle on Otago wing

Tasman lock Riki Hoeata and East Coast midfield back Rua Tipoki will face rugby judicial hearings after incidents at the weekend.

Hoeata was cited for an alleged dangerous tackle during his team's national provincial championship match against Otago in Nelson yesterday.

The 23-year-old is accused of making a late tackle and without the use of arms on Otago winger Joe Hill, in the 59th minute of the match. Otago won the match 19-16.

New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) judicial officer Bruce Squire QC will hear the charge against Hoeata at 5.30pm today.

Tipoki, a former New Zealand Maori representative, was sent off by referee James Munro in the 23rd minute of East Coast's heartland championship match against North Otago in Oamaru on Saturday after allegedly punching another player. North Otago won the match 52-17.

The red card means an automatic judicial hearing via teleconference before NZRU judicial officer Nick Davidson QC tomorrow at 4pm.
