Taieri put on a display of power at Tahuna Park on Saturday that erased any lingering doubts about the club's ability to be competitive in Dunedin premier rugby next year.

The Taieri pack smashed University B with its powerful scrum and driving maul in the promotion-relegation game to regain the premier status that it lost in 2001.

Taieri had been out of premier ranks since it voluntarily withdrew from the competition because of a lack of players that year.

A crowd of supporters cheered every bit of good play by Taieri and all the students' mistakes.

It would have been intimidating to University B.

The writing was on the wall in the first 3min when the Taieri pack drove ahead in its rolling maul from a line-out.

The first try came when captain and lock Kurt Webster grabbed the ball in the line-out 10m out, the rolling maul moved powerfully to the line and flanker Ben Kerr scored.

The Taieri pack also exerted its dominance in the scrum, pushing the students off the ball.

The students were a beaten team from this point and it was just a matter of how much Taieri would win by.

The second try came when the Taieri pack won a tighthead from a scrum close to the University B line and veteran No 8 Eric Vaafusuaga used his strength to drive over the line.

The third try, midway through the spell, also came from a scrum when Vaafusuaga moved down the short side and halfback Ricky Stewart scored in the corner to give Taieri a 17-0 lead.

Webster, who led by example, was the best line-out jumper for Taieri.

He scored a solo try after 34min, grabbing the ball in the line-out and sprinting 12m to score out wide and give Taieri a 22-7 lead at the break.

A feature of the first spell was the ease with which Taieri was able to grab the ball from student throws.

University B tightened its game in the second spell and put up a better challenge.

But it was too little, too late, and the game was put out of the students' grasp when flanker Jeremy Corliss grabbed the ball after it came loose from a scrum and dashed 12m for a try to stretch the lead to 29-7 just six minutes into the second spell.

Four of Taieri's tries came from drives and rolling mauls after it won line-out ball.

Webster grabbed the ball in three of these line-outs.

The other three tries came from the scrum which was spearheaded by the front row of Brad Gilmour, Charlie Harrex and Seth Burbury.

Also dominant were the loose forwards, the Taieri trio of Vaafusuaga, Corliss and Ben Kerr winning the battle at the breakdown.

The Taieri backline had a few wobbles when it sent the ball wide, but was a strong defensive unit with Rowan Shanks and Shane Crossan having a rock-like defence in the midfield.

Taieri 42 (Jared Campbell, Ricky Stewart, Eric Vaafusuaga, Jeremy Corliss, Ben Kerr (2), Kurt Webster tries; Matt Hogan 2 conversions, penalty goal),

University B 17 (Henry Holdaway, Simon Forrest, Jay Coote tries; Peter Grant conversion).

Half-time: 22-7.

Referee: Doug Rodgers.
