Among all the drama of the new Highlanders playing strip this week, the fact has been somewhat overlooked that they will farewell Carisbrook tonight. Rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks back at five memorable games played by the franchise at the old ground.

March 2, 1996, v Reds
won 57-17

This was the first professional game of competitive rugby played at Carisbrook in what was in the new flash Super 12.

The Queensland Reds went into the afternoon game the heavy favourites with the likes of John Eales and Tim Horan in their side.

But they were just blown away by a stunning effort from the Highlanders, coached by Gordon Hunter.

The home team led 35-0 at halftime, with future Highlanders captain Taine Randell, playing on the openside flank, getting the first try for the new Highlanders.

Backs Stu Forster and Stephen Bachop ran the show for the Highlanders and the home team ended up bagging seven tries.

April 10, 1996, v Natal
won 33-32

This was played on a Wednesday afternoon and a crowd of about 8500 turned up.

The Sharks looked in complete control and led 32-13 a quarter of an hour into the second half.

But the Highlanders never chucked in the towel and tries were scored by replacement Matt Cooper and John Leslie.

Cooper then banged over a penalty and with two minutes to go, Bachop was felled by a high tackle.

Cooper stepped up and sent the kick from about 45m out through the posts - just - and the Highlanders had made a spectacular comeback.

April 20, 1998, v Hurricanes
won 29-8

This was the match which really signalled the Highlanders had arrived.

After the team finished last in the previous year, Tony Gilbert came in as coach and the team was revitalised with a few new players and others coming into form.

The team started the season encouragingly but the litmus test was always going to be against the likes of Christian Cullen, Tana Umaga, Jon Preston and Filo Tiatia.

But the visitors were never in the running against an aggressive and accurate Highlanders side, in front of a crowd of just under 30,000 that Sunday afternoon.

The Highlanders dominated territory and led 12-8 at halftime.

It kept the pressure on in the second half and replacement halfback Byron Kelleher scored the try to clinch the match near the end.

The Highlanders would go on to upset pre-season predictions and make the semifinals.

May 31, 1999, v Crusaders, final
lost 24-19

This one is ensconced in the memory but plenty would prefer to forget it.

After beating the Stormers in Cape Town, which in itself was a massive effort, the Highlanders had to fly all the way back from the republic and get ready for the Crusaders, who had triumphed in Brisbane.

The hype was electric and the queue for tickets went around the ground early in the week.

The game was close - it was always going to be - but the Crusaders were just a bit too clinical, although the Highlanders led 14-9 at halftime.

Cheeky Crusaders winger Afata So'oalo won the game for his side with 16 minutes left with a clever chip and chase and just beating Brian Lima and Jeff Wilson to the ball.

The Highlanders tried to come back but it was not to be and the Crusaders went home happy.

March 7, 2009, v Crusaders
won 6-0

This was a game which had few points but plenty of drama.

Shihad was playing after the game, and many came along to see that.

The Crusaders lost captain Richie McCaw with a knee injury midway through the first half and Colin Slade missed the chance to put the Crusaders ahead.

Three-quarters into the match and still there was no score.

But Daniel Bowden finally broke the deadlock with a penalty goal after Brad Thorn infringed and Bowden nudged over another a few minutes later to seal the victory.
