Lack of depth? Those were the calls a few weeks ago about the national side but try telling that to Zac Guildford.

Guildford admits competition to get into the All Black starting side is tough but he is doing all he can.

Just 21, he burst on the national scene straight out of school, and made his test debut against Wales at the Millennium Stadium last year.

A measured debut, along with some impressive performances for the Crusaders this year, meant he was an automatic choice for the All Blacks this year.

But he was on the bench last week against Ireland and is now bursting to get a start against the Welsh at Carisbrook on Saturday.

"I just have to do as much as possible in training and then hope that the coaches see that. When I get the opportunity I will be ready for it," he said.

"Competition is pretty tough in the back three. There are only three positions to go for, so we are all chasing each other pretty hard.

"It is something that I'm not really used to. But there are some really good players on the bench so it [being on the bench] may continue. We'll just see how it goes.

"I guess it creates competition and brings out the best in the boys and you saw with that with what happened in the Irish game."

Guildford will be expected to get a run on Saturday in his favourite left-wing position and face a Welsh side, which will want to put up more of a fight than its Celtic cousin.

"I think quick ball is what we are looking for again. If we can keep it alive then we can expose the weak links in the other side's defence."

One of his opponents in the back three is his close friend and Hawkes Bay team-mate, Israel Dagg, who impressed in his test debut on Saturday night.

But Guildford had no doubt Dagg would play well against Ireland.

"It was no surprise with what he did on Saturday. You could see in the Super 14 he was ready for it.

"And on Saturday he was outstanding. Hopefully, he will get more opportunities because he is a quality player.

"He is a pretty relaxed sort of guy. But on Saturday he was pretty nervous.

"Me and Cory Jane were giving him a bit of stick but once he got out there and got his first touch he was away."
