Rugby: Southern beats Green Island 25-7

The Southern forwards gave a workmanlike display of disciplined rugby and paved the way for the comfortable win against Green Island in the inaugural Selwyn Inglis Memorial match at Bathgate Park.

The front row of Warren Moffat, Jed Vercoe and Dave Ogilvie gave Southern the advantage in the set pieces and they hammered the advantage home with drives up the centre.

No 8 Cam Goodhue also had a lively game.

He won useful ball at the back of the Southern line-out and his strong tackling shut down the Green Island backs.

First five-eighth Julius Glasson had a touch of class and gave Southern the early points when he scored the first try from a line-out after six minutes.

The other Southern back to stand out was centre Lucky Mulipola who made some strong breaks and efficiently fed his wings.

He looked more dangerous with the ball in hand than his opposite Ben Smith.

Halfback Mike Moeahu was the best of the Green Island backs and No 8 Nathan May had a strong game in the forwards.

Southern led 11-0 at the break but remained scoreless for 30 minutes in the second spell until Vercoe scored after a line-out.

Halfback Jarid Bradley broke away late in the game to extend the margin to 18 points.

Southern 25 (Julius Glasson, Jarid Bradley Jed Vercoe tries; Bradley, Hamish McKenzie conversions, Craig Sneddon 2 penalty goals), Green Island 7 (Paul Butson try; Tini Elisara conversion).

Half-time: Southern 11-0.

Referee: Adam Morrison.
