Rugby: South Otago 1st XV go top of table

South Otago High School have gone to top of the Southern Wide Real Estate 1st XV with an impressive 25-15 victory over the Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV.

The win came off the back of a strong first half in which South Otago scored two tries, while holding Otago Boys' scoreless, to lead 15-0 at the break.

Their forward pack exhibited outstanding speed to breakdown, getting there quickly and in numbers. It was this that enabled them to hold on to the ball for long periods and set a good platform for their dangerous backs to work from. The inside backs distributed well, while the midfield was dangerous all day, attracting defenders, making a handful of key breaks and providing a strong offloading game. Outside them the back three ran good lines in support to threaten regularly.

Otago Boys' fought their way back into the game in the latter stages, doing a better job of holding onto the ball and making inroads in close. South Otago held on well under pressure though and did enough to emerge ten point victors.

John McGlashan College also looked in good form in its 33-12 win over St Kevin's College in Oamaru. In other games Dunstan beat King's 43-40, Waitaki beat Kavanagh 27-13 and Mt Aspiring beat Taieri 33-17.
