Thomson, who on Sunday was dropped from the All Black side to contest the Tri-Nations tournament, has now been named in a 22-man trial squad for the sevens side for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.
Thomson (28) is joined in that squad by Otago back Ben Smith, while another discarded All Black in winger Zac Guildford has also made the squad.
Thomson has played sevens for New Zealand before, representing the national team in four tournaments in 2007.
His speed, and ability at the ruck and maul to turn the ball over, would appear ideally suited to the shorter version of the game.
Also included in the squad is winger Hosea Gear, who was desperately unlucky to not make the All Black squad, after an impressive effort for New Zealand Maori over the past couple of weeks.
The players gathered in Mt Maunganui yesterday and will train until Thursday.
New Zealand has never lost a sevens game at the Commonwealth Games, winning the gold medal the three times it has been contested.
But it will face some tough competition in India, with Samoa winning the world title this year, and Fiji, Australia and England sure to be dangerous.
New Zealand sevens coach Gordon Tietjens said he was pleased with the depth of players in the squad.
Winger Julian Savea, who was awarded the junior world player of the year at the World Junior Championships in Argentina last week, has also been chosen for the 22-man trial squad for the Games.
A 14-man squad for the Games will be named next month.
The players will then assemble for a two-day camp in Auckland on August 23-24 and then again on September 29 before departing for Dubai on October 1.
The squad will stay in Dubai for five days and 12 players will then travel on to Delhi.
Players not considered for the trial camp because of injury were Sean Maitland (shoulder), Tim Nanai-Williams (hamstring), Lelia Masaga (knee), Kendrick Lynn (groin), Jared Payne (ankle) and Scott Waldrom (hand).
