Rugby: Sassenachs set for start

A former Waikato outside back and a former New Zealand Warriors centre feature in a Sassenachs XV to take on Sydney University at Carisbrook today.

The Sassenachs XV is a shadow Highlanders development XV, and will be coached by Bruce Carvell and Mike Moeahu.

Former Waikato outside back Armyn Sanders will start at fullback for the Sassenachs team, while former New Zealand Warriors back Ryan Shortland is in the reserves and is expected to get a run.

Sanders has moved to Dunedin to further his rugby career and will play club rugby for Zingari Richmond, while Shortland will play for Taieri after being released by the Warriors last year.

Lock Ross Kennedy and centre Brett Mather are the only members from the Highlanders to start the game.

The rest of the side is made up of Otago B players and wider Highlanders squad members.

Many of the team played against a Crusaders development side in Timaru last Friday, going down 34-24.

The Sydney University team is a mixture of Colts and premier players. The match kicks off at 2pm.
