The Otago Sassenachs Colts programme ended with a bang in the weekend as it continues to fill a need for rugby in the region.

The colts team is made up of players who have links with Otago Country and the team had a three-match programme along with a training weekend.

One of the drivers behind the team, Bob Perriam, said the team was vital to keep players continuing in the game and helping them develop.

''These young men really do look forward to the it. It is extremely significant. These guys are at an impressionable age and providing something like this gives them a real focus,'' Perriam said.

With no colts grades in the country, players were forced to play premier grade straight out of school and many found the going tough.

But having a colts team at the end of the season was something for the players to aim for and keep players focused on the game.

The other two age-group teams in Otago - the under-19 side and the Otago Maori Colts - are dominated by players from the Dunedin club competition.

The colts team had a training camp in Dunedin where Highlanders players and management talked to the colts players.

They also visited the Otago ITM Cup squad.

Its first game was against Otago under-19 with the under-19 side running out the winner 41-26.

The next game was against a Canterbury Colts team with the Tiny Hill Trophy up for grabs.

The Sassenachs had won the game last year in Christchurch but this year, the Canterbury side turned up and played well to win 38-3 at the University Oval.

In the final game of its season last Saturday, the Sassenachs colts team defeated Otago Maori Colts at a muddy Bathgate Park 31-5. The side was coached by Bruce Wilkinson.

Players to stand out for the team were lock Brendon Murdoch from Taieri, forward Malcolm Sutherland from Arrowtown and back Daniel Adams, from West Taieri.

Hooker Jake McEwan from Wakatipu put in some impressive performances and has picked up a deal to play in Frankfurt in Germany in the off-season.
