Rugby: Referee mentor resigns

The Otago Rugby Football Union is looking for a new refereeing mentor.

Shane McKenzie is leaving his job as the union's referee education officer after 14 months in the role and is returning to private enterprise.

McKenzie (51) said he had thoroughly enjoyed the role but simply wanted to return to the private sector.

He is taking up a job with Alliance Meats as a retail manager.

McKenzie, who has refereed for more than 30 years, said the job of the referee had not changed over the years.

The union was always looking to recruit referees and had about 120 referees across the province.

He said many students were coming into refereeing ranks but he hoped more former players would take up the whistle.

Applications for his job close on Friday.

The two leading club sides in Otago rugby will meet in the curtain-raiser for the Super 14 match between the Highlanders and the Cheetahs on Saturday.

Alhambra-Union will play Arrowtown in the Heartland Cup at Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon.

Alhambra-Union won the Dunedin club rugby premiership last season while Arrowtown won the countrywide final, beating Lawrence in the final last year.

The match is an initiative of Otago rugby and will give the two sides a good hit-out before club rugby begins on March 28.

The match will kick off at 3pm, with the Super 14 match to follow at 5.30pm.

The Cheetahs will be playing the final game of their five-match tour of Australia and New Zealand, where they have so far not won a game.

The South African side is training in Queenstown this week, and will arrive in Dunedin on Thursday.
