Rugby: Otago zone being set up for Shield challenge

Wantingto go to the Ranfurly Shield challenge this Saturday but can not bear the pain of having to sit beside a one-eyed Canterbury supporter?

Well, you may not have anything to worry about.

The Otago Rugby Football Union has secured 400 tickets to create an "Otago zone" at AMI Stadium in Christchurch on Saturday.

ORFU commercial manager Mike Kerr said a couple of Otago supporters had made the suggestion and the Canterbury union had obliged with 400 tickets to the game.

Kerr said the tickets were for seats situated near the halfway line, which had a good view of the ground.

At the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Wellington in July, there was plenty of Otago support but it was scattered around the ground, he said.

The Otago zone would allow supporters to sit together.

Kerr said the tickets would only be on sale at Carisbrook until tomorrow at 5pm.

They cost $24 for an adult and $11 for a school child aged 15 or over.

Children 14 and under are free.

Otago plays Canterbury in its second Ranfurly Shield challenge of the year at 4.35pm on Saturday.

In 1984, when Otago was considered a real chance to win the Shield, a packed train headed north but Otago lost heavily 44-3.

This year no train will be going to Christchurch but a bus has been organised by House of Travel.

The $185 ticket would pay for the trip up and back, one night's accommodation, food and refreshments, including breakfast, and a ticket to the game.

The bus was already half full yesterday.

Kerr said the union was pleased with the crowd of 7000 for Sunday's match between Otago and Auckland.
