Rugby: Otago U19 faces tough starter

The Otago under-19 side heads into tomorrow's opening match of the national tournament with plenty of incentive to do well.

It has been drawn in the top pool of the 16-team tournament in Taupo, which is in its second year.

Each of the 14 unions from the ITM Cup has a side, Auckland has a second team and there is a combined Heartland XV team.

Otago qualified for the top group of the Jock Hobbs memorial tournament by beating Tasman and Southland in the South Island group before falling to Canterbury 54-11 last Saturday.

Otago coach Jason Macdonald said the side just did not turn up last week in Christchurch and Canterbury made the most of it.

But Otago should have learnt from the game and the team needed to be on the ball right from the kick-off.

Games are 35-minute halves at the tournament, which is 10 minutes less than what most players play in colts or premier grade.

Zingari-Richmond first five-eighth Thomas Johnson combines with halfback Kadin Brocks in the inside pairing, while Otago representative Sio Tomkinson will provide plenty of class in the midfield.

The former Otago Boys' High School product is playing for Otago today against Southland and will miss the game against North Harbour tomorrow.

Macdonald said North Harbour would be a tough test after beating the top Auckland team last week.

Otago has a solid front row with the likes of former national school representatives Jonah Aoina, Shaun Stodart and hooker Tom Hardy.

Big lock Ben Webby is over some back issues and the back three of Connor Fifita, Christian Kelly and Reece Mau'u should provide plenty of action should they get the ball.

Southern utility back Jono Hayes will share the captaincy with Hardy.

Macdonald said the side had a good group of leaders and would have the added bonus of the game tomorrow being broadcast on Sky television.

The match will kick off at 4.20pm.

Otago finished fifth last year. The other games will be played on Wednesday and Saturday.

Prop Meli Kolinisau and flanker Filipo Veamatahau, from North Otago, will represent the Heartland side, which will play Counties-Manukau tomorrow at 2.40pm. It also will be broadcast.
